Oddeline: Mercury Ascendant

Oddeline: Mercury Ascendant

Ottawa-based folk musician Oddeline’s new single, Mercury Ascendant, wears its influences from the darker side of classic folk music on its sleeve. Taking inspiration from Nick Drake, Francoise Hardy, Bob Dylan, and Leonard Cohen, the song features pared down percussion, lush strings, and fingerpicked guitar. Passing as a sweet, simple love song, the lyrics poke fun at the long tradition of the “silent muse” – a figure celebrated by artists as a source of inspiration, depicted as sort of a mirror to the artist with nothing of their own to contribute.

The single, out March 28th, 2024, is her first solo studio release since 2021, with a follow-up single soon to be announced.
