Nadine Altounji: Zayt el Oud

Nadine Altounji: Zayt el Oud

Nadine Altounji, a Montreal singer-songwriter of Syrian descent, announces the release of her latest single, “Zayt el Oud,” on June 18th, 2024. Following her third EP, "Enracinées dans l’histoire – Vol.2," this song highlights her artistic growth, featuring lyrics in Arabic and English.

Co-produced with Moroccan producer WU-SEN (Homa Records), "Zayt el Oud" blends soulful oud melodies with Afrobeat rhythms and introspective lyrics, creating a sound that is both innovative and timeless. The title, inspired by WU-SEN’s comparison of Nadine’s music to oil extracted from a metaphorical oud tree, celebrates Arab roots and challenges simplistic media portrayals of Arabs. The song also includes WU-SEN reciting lines from Mahmoud Darwish's poem "Identity Card,” reinforcing the artists’ stance on our current times.

Nadine's previous EPs garnered attention from Putumayo World Music, which featured her songs “Dans la folie de nos temps” and “No lo Olviden” on their compilation albums. She has captivated audiences globally, performing from Paris to Dakar, and gracing stages at festivals such as Afropolitan Nomad, Pop Montreal, MUZ, and Le Bistro de la Place des Arts in Sudbury. You can catch her at the Calgary Folk Festival this summer.
