Folk Music Canada in Partnership with Folk Music Ontario present the Export Ready Webinar Series, taking place via Zoom each Wednesday in March 2023.

Join us for 5 in-depth sessions as speakers discuss some of the top issues facing artists looking to work and share their music across the border and beyond. Our experienced speakers will share their expert insights, helpful tips, and explanations of complex topics such as VISA applications, tax issues, market analysis, opportunities, and more. Following each presentation will be a live Q+A session, where you can pose your specific questions and bolster your knowledge for the next step in your career.

Session #5: Folk Music Opportunities in Africa Wednesday, March 29, 2023 - 3:00pm EST w/ Hind El Ouardi & Nadine McNulty Hosted by: Rosalyn Dennett, Folk Music Ontario

Hind El Ouardi is a newcomer to Canada. She was born and raised in Morocco and worked in different capacities for Hiba Foundation, Maroc Cultures, Gnawa, and CasaMusic, among other arts organizations and festivals in Morocco. She was also involved in a number of projects, including the Moroccan Music Export Office and the African and Middle Eastern Music Conference Visa For Music.

Nadine McNulty has contributed to the development and growth of African music and culture in Toronto over a period of twenty-five years. Nadine McNulty is an arts consultant and the Artistic Director of Batuki Music Society, a non-profit African arts organization dedicated to nurturing and strengthening cultural diversity through music and the arts. Batuki Music Society promotes African music and culture through performances, films, workshops and events throughout the year, as well as the annual Habari Africa Festival. Nadine is also the producer and host of Karibuni, a music program aired weekly on CIUT 89.5 FM, a broadcast that is dedicated to promoting African music ranging from traditional to contemporary forms. This program also acts as a voice for African communities, musicians and the overall African music scene in the city and beyond.

Our tour of the world continues, this time with a stop in South Asia! FMO's Rosalyn Dennett will speak with Ankur Malhotra and Umair Jaffar for an in-depth look at the opportunities for artists across the southern part of Earth's largest continent. Don't miss this chance to ask the experts your direct questions about hitting the road in South Asia!

ANKUR MALHOTRA is an Emmy-nominated entrepreneur, engineer and musicologist with an MBA from the Wisconsin School of Business. He is co-founder of Amarrass Records (a multi-faceted record label, events and artist management company) and Madison Music Review (producer of Musique Electronique, Willy Street Beats), a DJ/host on WORT 89.9FM, and a published photographer/videographer. He has served as a Jury Member at WOMEX, music advisor to the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), and is a panelist for the Transglobal World Music Charts. His work in the revival of folk music and vinyl culture in India has been featured in the New York Times, NPR, BBC, WPR, Rolling Stone India and more.

UMAIR JAFFAR is the Executive Director of Small World Music, one of Toronto’s pioneering and most significant presenters of culturally-diverse music. Since arriving in Toronto in 2014, he has worked in curatorial and management roles at cultural institutions including the Aga Khan Museum and Harbourfront Centre. Prior to immigrating, he was the CEO & Artistic Director for IPAC (Institute for Preservation of Art and Culture), a Pakistan-based non-profit social enterprise that focused on developing sustainable solutions for preserving and promoting indigenous, folk and traditional performing arts. Umair also serves as a board member for several non-profit art organizations including CAPACOA, North York Arts and MusiConnect Asia. He has an MBA from University of Adelaide, Australia and a MSc Cultural Anthropology from University of Oxford, UK.

Laia Kverneland is the chairwoman of the board of Nordic Folk Alliance. Laia is the International Projects Manager & Artist Coach at Tempi - an organisation working to promote folk-, world- and related music genres in Denmark - and has been one of the driving forces behind putting Nordic Folk Alliance initiative together.

Laia has a background as Artis Business Coach, Export Advisor, Manager & Booking Agent, as well as a frequent lecturer and panelist. She is a board member of Folk Alliance International, and is currently based in Copenhagen.

Session #2: Wednesday, March 8, 2023 - 3:00pm EST Eastern Europe and the Estonian Music Market with Sebastian Buccioni of Music Estonia

Sebastian Buccioni is the Artistic and Executive Director of Estonian Music Week (EMW), Toronto and a Project Manager at Music Estonia (ME), Tallinn. Despite the challenges of the pandemic Buccioni successfully organized EMWs first online season in 2020 followed by its first hybrid music festival in 2021, which connected performers on two stages 6700 km apart in real-time through the power of live-stream. Buccioni takes a collaborative approach to programming, working with community groups to deliver meaningful content. Expanding EMW beyond programming, Buccioni is the driving force behind EMW's involvement in music import/export between Canada and Estonia. As a Project Manager, Buccioni is largely responsible for ME’s international conference and tradeshow portfolio (including WOMEX, Reeperbahn, and Jazzahead! among others). His work involves organizing delegations and events, conducting market research and advising artists. Buccioni served on the board of Toronto Operetta Theatre for 4 years including 1.5 years as President. While active as a musician Buccioni was known for his work as a Hammond Organist and Keyboardist with the Julian Taylor Band, the Out of Towners and Chameleon Project. His compositional work has earned him a FACTOR and Canada Council for the Arts grant. Buccioni holds a BFA with specialization in music from York University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Management from Queen’s.

SESSION 1: Wednesday, March 1, 2023 - 3:00pm EST VISAs & Immigration w/ Liana White, Executive Director, Canadian Federation of Musicians

On March 1, 2023 Liana White of the Canadian Federation of Musicians will take us on a deep dive through the complex world of immigration and VISAs as it relates to exporting Canadian Folk artists, including the proposed increases to the P and O VISA fees, and how folks can act to affect these changes.

About Liana: Liana White is the Executive Director of the Canadian National Office of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (CFM). With over 25 years’ experience helping musicians to navigate the legal requirements to perform cross border, White has become recognized within the music industry as a leading authority on VISAs and immigration. Liana is involved in every aspect of the union's operations, from lobbying and negotiating lucrative agreements on behalf of musicians, to mentoring them. She also sits on the Board of Women in Music Canada, and on the Canadian Labour Congress Women’s Caucus and the Workers of Colour Caucus.
