Dougal Bichan: Sunflowers For Ukraine

Dougal Bichan: Sunflowers For Ukraine

The war goes on and on. Another war starts. There are too many wars to deal with. One is too many. It is painful to watch the news. It is difficult to read the papers. The radio is no better. Even strangers on the streetcar feel compelled to discuss it.

Sunflowers are the symbol of Ukraine. The country exports more sunflower oil than any other country, even Russia. That may be the problem. “Sunflowers for Ukraine” is Dougal’s response to the war, and the relentless media coverage. It is being released as a single, although it might properly be called a “double”, because it is eight minutes long. There is, however, also a four minute version, for those who might prefer it. The single will be released widely on all the usual platforms by January 15, 2024.

The song was written by Dougal Bichan. The so called “Covid-19 Lockdown Band” that is credited on the song, came out of Dougal’s attempt to deal with the social isolation of the pandemic by playing all the instruments himself. A CD of selected songs is in the works for later this year.
